Lock your folder with Microsoft Private Folder

Microsoft Private Folder created a single folder on the user's desktop which, when opened for the first time, prompted the user to assign it a password. the user had to re-enter the same password to re access the folder . Microsoft Private Folder is a useful tool for you to protect your private data when your administrator or other people share your PC or account. It is assumed that Private Folder used strong encryption with a key based solely on this password to secure the data contained in the folder. This is in contrast to Microsoft's Encrypting File System, where encryption is tied to a keypair which can be made accessible to IT staff.Private Folder used a system service called prfldrsvc (display name: Private Folder Service), the function of which is not yet publicly known.

Tech updates on Video games

Sony introduced a slimmed down version of the PS2 in November 2004. The new PS2 also has an Ethernet connection port.
Sony also announced that they would be using Blu-Ray discs for the PS3.
Microsoft's next version of the Xbox will come out in three stages. First, is the Xbox Next, which will not have a hard drive. Second, is the Xbox Next HD, which will have a hard drive and possibly a video recorder. Finally there is the Xbox Next PC that will combine the Xbox Next with a low level PC.
Nintendo released the handheld Nintendo DS in November 2004. The game system has dual screens and a bundle with a game sells for around $180.
Sony has yet to release their new handheld game system the PSP in the US. It was released in Japan in December 2004 and has already sold over 800,000. It is expected that the PSP won't arrive in the US and UK until March 2005.
California passed a watered down version of Assembly Bill 1793 in 2004. The bill originally set out to regulate the sale of M rated video games to minors. The final bill requires retailers to post information about game ratings and to provide a brochure on the subject.
Video gaming appears to be moving in two directions. In one direction are more powerful consoles with more ٌrealisticî games such as the Army's training game Full Spectrum Warrior, now a popular game for the X-box.
In the other direction, low tech, casual, and retro games are increasingly popular. Low-tech, casual on-line games are very popular with women. Yahoo has 10 million players per month with one third of the players are women. EA's Pogo.com has 14 million players per month, 55% of them women.
Radica Games and Jakks Pacific are offering retro games with the Sega Genesis and the Atari System. Jakks Pacific has a system that retails for $20 with 4-10 games built in such as Asteroids, Centipede, and Ms. Pac Man.
Nintendo has released some information on its new handheld, the DS, and its new console, code name ٌRevolution.î The company says it will focus on casual users and new ways to play games rather than faster, more powerful, and ٌmore realisticî games and systems ـ the strategy of rivals Sony and Microsoft.
Finally, who says you can't make money playing video games. Korean cable television now has 3 channels devoted to live video game matches between professional video game players.
Nintendo released the DS on November 21, 2004. The handheld device sells for $149.99 and includes dual screens, a touch pad and voice recognition. It also allows wireless communication and PictoChat software. The DS is also backwards compatible with Game Boy Advance games.
The Sony PSP was released on March 24, 2005. This device sells for $249.99. The PSP has 802.11b wireless connectivity and USB 2.0 and Memory Stick inputs. The device plays games and movies on UMDs. The PSP is also an MP3 player. Hackers have already created new functions for the PSP including an e-book reader, instant messaging, and the ability to download programming from TiVo.
Microsoft introduced the X-Box 360 on MTV May 12, 2005. The next generation X-Box indeed has a hard drive – 20 GBs – that is upgradeable and detachable. It uses an IBM PowerPC processor. It is Wi-Fi ready and has built in Ethernet support. The console also has built in HD game support and it has زout of the box access to Xbox Live featuresس The rumor is that the console will be released before Thanksgiving (November 24, 2005).
Due out in Spring 2006, the PS3 will be backwards compatible with the Playstation 2 and 1. It will use a PowerPC based chip called the "Cell" and will also support High Definition. Like the Xbox 360, the PS3 is Wi-Fi ready and has built in Ethernet. Games will use Blue-ray discs.
The popular game "Grand Theft Auto 3: San Andreas" had it's rating changed from M to AO (Adult-Only) after adult sexual content was discovered within the game. Users could unlock the content with secret codes. The game was pulled from the shelves of major retailers including Wal*Mart and Target.

Recent Developments in Personal Computers

Apple introduced the Mac mini, an affordable computer that sells for $499 and up. The computer includes a G4 processor and Apple's iLife software. The computer doesn't include a keyboard, mouse, or monitor though.
The EU ruled that Microsoft had to remove Windows Media Player from Windows. Microsoft didn't appeal and will ship the stripped down version of Windows to Europe in 2005.
Microsoft continues to make news. The U.S. appeals court finally approved Microsoft's 2001 anti-trust settlement with the Justice Department. However, the company's anti-trust problems are far from over. Microsoft as of Summer 2004 is challenging a European Union decision that it violated anti-trust rules, arguing that the rules were misapplied. Finally the company is under serious pressure as nations are frequently turning to open source software, such as Linux. In response, Microsoft has cut the price for its software in some poorer nations that are rapidly expanding computer use. For example, a Thai language version of XP with MS Office sells for just $36.
Software piracy continues to be a problem. The Business Software Alliance reported that $29 billion are lost each year.
Apple Computers released the newest version of its operating system OS X called ٌTiger.î
Apple announced in June 2005 that it will be switching to Intel processors. The chips will allow Mac computers to "run faster and cooler, and have longer battery life" according to Walter Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal. The first computers with the new chip are expected in Spring 2006.
Microsoft introduced the Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, which works with Media Centers PCs. The operating system includes Windows Media Player 10, DVD and CD burning, improved gaming and Windows Movie Maker 2.1.

Exxon helping to power electric cars

VANCOUVER, December 5, 2007 (GLOBE-Net) –Exxon Mobil Corp., the largest oil company in the United States, has developed a technology that may help the automotive industry switch to lighter, more efficient lithium batteries and open the door to the next generation of hybrid and electric vehicles.
ExxonMobil and Japanese affiliate, Tonen Chemical, have developed a thin film separator that will allow lithium batteries large enough for an automobile to be produced without overheating.
“By developing new film technologies that allow lithium-ion batteries to meet hybrid and electric vehicle requirements, ExxonMobil Chemical is helping to make next generation vehicles more energy and cost efficient, as well as lighter,” said Jim P. Harris, senior vice president, ExxonMobil Chemical Company.
Currently, nickel hydride batteries are widely used in automobiles, while lithium batteries remain small and primarily used in consumer electronics. Although nickel hydride batteries are not as cost effective, efficient or light as heir lithium counterparts, lithium batteries of a size adequate for automobiles easily overheat and can catch on fire.
Separators, which exist in all lithium batteries, insulate the anode from the cathode through the centre of the battery to prevent overheating. As lithium batteries become larger, without adding sufficient insulation, the heat generated between the anode and cathode can overcome the separator.
This has prevented lithium batteries from replacing nickel hydride in vehicles and in turn prevented the development of more cost effective and efficient hybrids, thereby stalling the release of a fully electric plug-in car.
Unlike earlier gasoline-electric hybrids, which run on a system of twin batteries and a combustion engine, plug-ins are zero emission and optimally designed for short commutes. Powered entirely by an electric motor and a battery charged through a socket at home, the operation of these vehicles does not contribute to GHG emissions.
Major cities that experience some of the highest vehicle-related emissions levels in the world would benefit greatly from the growth of the plug-in technology market.
Exxon, a company that in the past was criticized for ignoring the urgency of climate change, believes its innovative battery technology may be a major breakthrough in mitigating the crisis. Exxon is demonstrating that even one of the world’s largest oil companies can do its part to reduce a dependence on fossil fuels.
Automobile manufacturers are all ready planning to launch fully electric vehicles, The Chevrolet Volt from
General Motors is to be released by the end of 2010. The new technology from Exxon may prompt a more rapid and wider release from other manufacturers.
ExxonMobil Chemical will present the new film technologies at the 23rd Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exposition (EVS-23) in Anaheim, Calif. on December 2-5, 2007.
The
AutoFuture Tech Summit 2008, which takes place in tandem with the Globe 2008 International Trade Fair in Vancouver, BC, will feature speakers and exhibits on lithium batteries and hybrid cars. The economic, social and environmental potential of plug-in vehicles and the impacts these will have on the future of the automobile industry will be explored at AutoFuture Tech.

Program to Accelerate the Deployment of CO2 Capture and Storage

A Program to Accelerate the Deployment of CO2 Capture and Storage: Rationale, Objectives, and Cost is the first in a series of Pew Center papers that explore strategies for addressing CO2 emissions from using coal to provide electricity.
This white paper analyzes one strategy for accelerating the deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) by the coal-fueled electricity generation industry.
This strategy involves providing reimbursement for the incremental costs of installing and operating CCS systems, with reimbursement provided for retrofitting existing coal-fueled electricity generation plants with CCS, incorporating CCS into new plants, and launching large-scale demonstrations of geologic storage of carbon.
One of the most significant challenges in addressing global climate change is reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from the use of coal. Coal use, primarily for the generation of electricity, now accounts for roughly 20 percent of global GHG emissions.
Rising energy demand will continue to drive up coal consumption, particularly in countries with large reserves such as the United States, China, and India. By 2030, GHG emissions from coal-fired power plants in these three countries alone may be equivalent to one-fourth of total global energy-related emissions today.
To avoid—or minimize—dangerous human interference with the climate system and at the same time ensure adequate, affordable energy supplies, it is critical that these and other countries adopt policies and technologies that enable continued use of coal while dramatically reducing its GHG emissions profile. To help address this challenge, the Pew Center is undertaking a major initiative to identify policy options for reducing coal-related GHG emissions. This initiative will produce a series of papers examining:
Technology pathways for future coal use, both for power generation and other potential end uses, that will assist in reducing emissions, particularly by enabling the introduction of carbon capture-and-storage (CCS) technologies; and
Policy options at the national, state, and international levels to drive the deployment of advanced generation technologies and, ultimately, widespread capture and sequestration of coal-related GHG emissions.
These papers will be undertaken in collaboration with leading experts and with advice and input from a Consultative Group of experts, policymakers, and stakeholders. Please click on report titles in the "Related Content" box to view the Coal Series white papers.

Lighting the way: Toward a sustainable energy future

AMSTERDAM, October 22, 2007 (Environmental Leader) - The InterAcademy Council has released a new report, commissioned by the governments of Brazil and China, identifying and detailing the scientific consensus framework for directing global energy development. Lighting the way: Toward a sustainable energy future lays out the science, technology and policy roadmap for developing energy resources to drive economic growth in both developed and developing countries while also securing climate protection and global development goals.
The InterAcademy Council (IAC) is a multinational organization of science academies created to mobilize the world’s best scientists, engineers, and medical experts for providing knowledge and advice to national governments and international bodies, notably the United Nations and the World Bank. It was established in May 2000.
“Lighting the way: Toward a sustainable energy future” lays out the science, technology and policy roadmap for developing energy resources to drive economic growth in both industrialized and developing countries while also securing climate protection and global development goals.
The report calls for immediate action in three areas:
- Concerted efforts should be mounted to improve energy efficiency and reduce the carbon intensity of the world economy, including the worldwide introduction of price signals for carbon emissions.
- Technologies should be developed and deployed for capturing and sequestering carbon from fossil fuels, particularly coal.
- Development and deployment of renewable energy technologies should be accelerated in an environmentally responsible way.
Commissioned by the governments of Brazil and China, this report identifies a scientific consensus framework for directing global energy development. It lays out the science, technology and policy roadmap for developing energy resources to drive economic growth in both industrialized and developing countries while also securing climate protection and global development goals.
The report was produced by a study panel of 15 world-renowned energy experts, co-chaired by Nobel Laureate Steven Chu, Director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab in the United States, and José Goldemberg, former Secretary of State for the Environment for the State of São Paulo, Brazil.
Lighting the way establishes the best practices for a global transition to a clean, affordable and sustainable energy supply in both developing and developed countries. The report addresses incentives that can accelerate the development of innovative solutions, provides recommendations for financial investments in research and development and explores other transition pathways that can transform the landscape of energy supply and demand around the globe.
In addressing mitigation of the environmental impacts of energy generation and use, Lighting the way informs global action on climate change, such as implementation of the Kyoto Protocol, agenda setting for the Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate, and ongoing multinational talks on future global action to reduce greenhouse emissions.
Lighting the way also confronts the unequal access to energy experienced by the one-third of the world’s population without access to basic energy services, and makes recommendations for addressing this disparity as well as for promoting national and global energy security.
“The ‘business as usual’ energy path we are on today is not sustainable and is counter to the long-term prosperity of every nation,” said Nobel Laureate Steven Chu today, co-chair of Lighting the Way and Director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.
“This report stresses the urgency of the energy problem, and then goes on to describe technologies that can be applied today, needed scientific and technological innovations, and policy tools that could be used to help policy makers guide their countries toward a more prosperous, secure and environmentally sound energy future.”
Lighting the way recommends that governments, united in inter-governmental organizations, should agree on realistic price signals for carbon emissions, recognizing that the economics and energy systems of different countries will result in different individual strategies and trajectories.

Technology - The Way It Is

Technology has bridged the world in a seamless transaction and manufacturing line. Technology is supposed to be helping us relieve the burden of repetitive and unnecessary actions by doing the manual work for us. That fact is that technology changes. The new DVD technology increased the amount of memory a regular CD can hold. They can only be read by laser technology. Technology provides users with the ability to easily add features that aren't part of their computers when they purchase them.
It gives computer users the ability to add memory, communications, multimedia and security to their desktop and mobile systems. TV viewing technology is a snap with new Programming. Hopefully, with the advent of the concept of transparent technology and automation, developers will realize how technology should be made. Due to technology increasing at a rapid rate the surplus of electronics has enabled many smaller wholesale distributors to enter the market and offer refurbished wholesale computers. Globally technology has changed the way we search information.
Technical Support
In the past, women were discouraged to enter the world of the computer technology because it was thought of as a man's world. Women were insisted that what was the most important thing about being a woman was a close relationship to the technology. The social aspect of the computer technology is an interesting topic. But few ever really took the time to learn more about it. The most alarming thing is that most users today are accepting the technology as it is. Both money and consumers have been driving the evolution of technology and no one really has had an overview or control over its natural process so things are inevitably as they are now.

3G Technology on Mobile Phones

Third generation technology, better known as 3G technology has hit the United States and is here to stay. What 3G doesn’t do is have an obvious impact on the look, fell or design of a cellular phone. However, what 3G does dose is promise faster communication services which include fax, voice, and even internet services. This can be offered 3G uses seamless global roaming. New multimedia entertainment and applications are able to be used to their maximum capability because of the 3G network. The first 3G network was actually released in Japan, and is now offered in the United States by companies like Cingular.
Along the same lines of 3G technology, Verizon has decided along with Sprint/Nextel to offer their own version of 3G services but is called Ed-Vo. Other companies such as T-Mobile don’t plan to roll out this technology with their services until 2007. So what is 3G technology exactly? This technology will bring wireless data services to your phone like you’ve never seen them before. This technology boasts speeds about three times faster than a 56 Kbps connection to 2.4Mbps connection speed, equivalent to using a cable modem. 3G networks allow users to easily and quickly read through web pages, watch streaming music videos, and use video conferencing to its fullest.
The experience you will have while using 3G technology with a cellular phone will be one close to using your home computer with a broadband connection. It seems that hand held computers are definitely the way of the future. With each company committing to spending billions of dollars to upgrade to a 3G network, this technology is surely worth the price we will all undoubtedly pay. But with a loss each company will take to upgrade, comes a need to gain customers, so look for new and improved handsets to launch when your favorite company upgrades to using this system.

New Computer Technology - When is Enough, Enough?

New computer technology comes out continuously. As a computer consultant you probably want to keep up with all the new computer technology that comes along. You're most likely in love with technology - always looking for a new intrusion protection product to play with or another border-gateway protocol. What you have to realize is that your small business clients aren't experimenting with new computer technology and so you shouldn't be wasting your time investigating it.
New Computer Technology Distractions
New computer technology is a distraction you can't afford. It's easy to get caught-up with keeping-up, but, no one is paying you for your raw technical knowledge. They aren't paying you for knowing the latest new computer technology, they are paying you for knowing the technology they are using.
If you've been in corporate IT for a long time you're way ahead of the average small business anyway. The average small business is going to be at least six to twelve sometimes even 18 months behind the new computer technology you see in the average enterprise IT shop.
In the early stages of your business, you have to put learning new computer technology on the back burner. Adjust your priorities and put 90 percent of your R&D on the back burner for the next three to six months. Concentrate on finding paying clients. If those paying clients start demanding skills with new computer technology, that's when you invest your time and energy.
The Bottom Line on New Computer Technology
You're in the business you're in because you love new computer technology. Unfortunately, in the business building stage you can't afford to spend your time learning, you have to spend your time doing - and getting paid for doing it. New computer technology isn't being used in the majority of clients' applications anyway. Put your passion for new computer technology on hold for a while and be passionate about finding steady, paying customers.

IBM Lotus Symphony

Call it an Office showdown… IBM issues a challenge to Microsoft’s popular Office suite of software with free alternativesUsability, portability and price. These are the three battlegrounds on which IBM hopes to woo customers away from Microsoft. For well over a decade, Microsoft’s Office has been the default answer for word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software. Other players had never really made a dent since Office took over. But now there are viable challengers. Last month, IBM began offering Lotus Symphony – a suite of all three applications available as a test version. The suite had been available as part of its Lotus 8 software, but is now available as a free download for Windows and Linux PCs.By comparison, the cheapest version of Microsoft Office costs well over $100.

Windows XP Lives..

Microsoft says its customers have spoken, and they’re keeping open the Window on Windows XP for six more monthsEven before Windows Vista went on sale in January, many corporate computer professionals were expressing concerns about switching over to the new, more advanced operating system. At the time, Microsoft had said it would retire the program’s predecessor, Windows XP, in January 2008.But even though Microsoft has sold more than 60 million copies of Vista, the company is bowing to pressure to continue selling XP through next June. Company policy is to stop selling operating systems four years after their release. But since Vista was plagued by delays, Windows XP was five and a half years old by the time its successor hit the stores. Microsoft will stop selling XP next summer, but computer makers can continue selling it through January 2009.

Microsoft Unveils New Zunes...Phones Challenge iPods

If you’re thinking about buying a mobile phone or a music player, there are plenty of choices out there, and not all of them start with the letter “i.” Today, Verizon Wireless and Microsoft are announcing separate devices that aim to challenge Apple. At first glance, the LG Voyager might look like an iPhone, but make no mistake – it is something else entirely. The Voyager sports a large touch screen, and, like the iPhone, can play your music files, take two megapixel pictures and has an HTML web browser.
But that’s where the similarities end. The Voyager flips open to reveal a keyboard for text and instant messaging, it’s got Bluetooth stereo and a memory slot so you can expand your music to 8 gigabytes. The LG Voyager will be available from Verizon Wireless before thanksgiving – pricing was not announced. Also today, Microsoft is announcing its second generation
Zune music players , with models priced to match and equipped to beat Apple’s iPods.
The new Zune sports an 80-gigabyte hard drive and a 3.2-inch color screen. There are also new 4- and 8-gigabyte flash memory models, similar in size and shape to the previous generation iPod Nano. The Zunes also feature FM tuners and wireless synching through Wi-Fi.
Microsoft has a lot of ground to make up for. The company has sold just over one million of its Zune players since their release last year. Apple, whose iPod debuted in 2001, has sold well over 100 million iPods.
